Biscornu

In my quest to learn something new everyday I stumbled across Biscornu.   I take a short hiatus from stitching and look what I miss!  For those of you, like myself, that have been in the dark these last few years, Biscornu is a French word meaning skewed, quirky or irregular.  According to the dictionary, it is a small, 8 sided, ornamental pincushion.  They are either embroidered or cross stitched and have an indentation in the middle made by a button.

Other than a pincushion, they make cute ornaments, key chains, and scissor fobs.  I can’t believe how many different patterns are out there!  Basket of Biscornu has posted pictures of hers and many other stitcher’s finished work. You can really see all the different ways they can be done.

If you are interested in learning how to make one, there are a number of sites for that too.  Own Two Hands has very clear directions and pictures.  There are a number of web sites that have free charts for them.  Some of those sites are listed after her directions, toward the bottom of the page.

I can’t wait to get started on one! – or, two or more!  Wouldn’t they make cute gifts?!
